Geophysics Research Unit (GRU)

Department of Physics, Faculty of Science,

Prince of Songkla University

Geophysics is one of the active research unit at Physics department, Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University.  Researches are mainly conducted in both geophysics and applied geophysics. Research topics  in  geophysics  are seismology, micro-earthquakes and palaeomagnetic.  For applied geophysics, study of local and regional geological structures, ground water prospecting, mineral and petroleum exploration, application of geophysics in engineering, environmental and archeological problems are being addressed.

The group has been financially supported by the International Programme in the Physical Sciences (IPPS) of Uppsala university, Sweden since 1987. The support comprises fellowships, research equipment and literature and travel grant for Swedish supervisors.  The academic supports are come from Uppsala university and Lulea University of Technology, Sweden.  At present, the  group has  numbers of research-grade facilities in seismology, rock magnetism and applied geophysics.  so that the group can provide number of geophysics courses for BSc. (Physics), MSc. (Physics) and MSc. (Geophysics) programmes.

Academic collaboration in geophysics with national and regional institutes is on its way.  The collaboration  comprises a  sharing of geophysical equipment, jointed research work, exchange of academic staffs as well as graduate students.  All are planned to ensure that geophysics researches contribute to the new finding about the earth, applicable research results and qualified geophysics student.
