About Phuket
Phuket is known as the Pearl
of the Andaman Sea. It's beautiful, balmy and home to some
of Asia's finest beaches. Patong Beach is the main beach,
with more resorts, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and
sporting activities than any other. It's spectacular,
bustling, lively and fun.

http://www.phuket-maps.com
Phuket Weather
Phuket has a tropical monsoon
climate. It's warm all year 'round, but the two periods of
April-May and September-October are the hottest. The
September-October period is also the wettest.
The best time to visit Phuket
is during the cool NE monsoon season, from November through
March when it isn't so humid, and the cool breezes keep
things comfortable. The average temperature is around 75F to
89F (24C to 32C).
Visas
Visitors holding a valid
passport or travel documents issued by a country included in
Thailand's official list of eligible countries can enter the
country for one month without a visa. If you're planning a
longer stay, you must apply for a Tourist Visa valid for 60
days, from a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. Visa
extensions can be applied for at the Immigration Department
in Bangkok or in Phuket.
Please note: Visa regulations
are subject to change, so it's best to check with your local
Thai Embassy or Consulate for details from your country.
By Air
Several airlines now fly
direct to Phuket's International Airport from international
locations, making a stopover in Bangkok unnecessary,
especially during the high season (November - April.) It is
still the trend for many tourists to come through Bangkok
however, catching domestic flights via Thai Airways, which
run regularly through the day, 7 days a week.
Flight schedules can be found
on the Thai Airways web page or Tel: +66 (0)2 232 8000
(Bangkok office) or +66 (0)76 327 144 (Phuket office).
A complete list of airlines
servicing Phuket and links to flight schedules are provided
here http://www.phuket.com/island/airlines.htm
Phuket Airport
Even though it ranks second
in the country in terms of passenger and freight volume it
is quite a modest airport and within minutes of landing you
will be in the terminal. Only a few hundred meters to the
west, the Andaman Sea laps up on Mai Khao Beach ('White
Wood') and Nai Yang Beach. (Click here to read about Phuket
International Airport facilities as well as Airports
Transfers options: http://www.phuket.com/info/phuket-airport.htm)
By Train
There is no direct train link
to Phuket. Trains go to from Hualomphong Station in Bangkok
to Surathani. From there you catch a bus to Phuket.
Most tour companies can issue
tickets which include the bus transfer from Surat. The train
journey takes about 12 hours from Bangkok with another 4
hours from Surat to Phuket by road.
Trains have different classes
which range in price, according to whether the seats are in
a compartment and/or whether it's air-conditioned or fan.
For train schedules contact
the State Railway of Thailand Tel: +66 (0)2 220 4334.
Advance tickets are available at all main stations or the
Bangkok Advance Booking Office, Tel. +66(0)2 225-0300 ext
5200-3.
Overland by Road
You can travel to Phuket from
Bangkok by bus - a trip that takes about 14 hours. Daily
services leave from the Southern Bus Terminal in Thonburi,
with many private services available from almost any travel
agent or hotel tour desk in the city.
For information on bus
timetables contact the Southern Bus Terminal on
Boromratchchonnani Rd, Bangkok, Tel: +66 (0)2 435-1200,
434-7192. Most services will bring you directly to the
Phuket Bus Terminal in Phuket Town, from where you can take
a taxi, tuk tuk or local bus to most beaches on the island.
If you prefer to drive
yourself, there are many car hire firms in Bangkok,
including international rental companies such as Hertz,
Budget and Avis, which offer full insurance and advice on
your routing. The road system is good and well sign-posted,
but great care needs to be taken when driving in Thailand.
Rules are often ignored!
Please note: An International
Driving License is required for full insurance cover.

Thailand Society of Exploration Geophysicists
(TSEG) is
providing financial support for SEG Student Chapters at Thai
Universities, so that the students can join and participate
in the Geophysics 2010 Conference in Phuket. TSEG will
fund each student chapter with up to 10,000 Baht to support
travel and other expenses for the students. The academic
advisor of the student chapter has to submit a short letter
(1-2 pages) to the TSEG president any time before the
conference explaining the rationale of the planned
expenditure. TSEG will decide on each application and

INFORMATION FOR POSTER
PRESENTERS |
|
Poster Size
The recommended
size for each poster is 1.0 m high by 0.7 m wide. (100 cm by
70 cm)
Please ensure
that your poster does not exceed this size.
Please ensure that you stand
by your poster(s) during your session for discussion and
questions. You will be notified of your allocated session
shortly along with set up and tear down times.
GENERAL
GUIDELINES FOR POSTER PRODUCTION
A poster should be
self-contained and self-explanatory, allowing different
viewers to proceed on their own while the author is free to
supplement or discuss particular points raised in inquiry.
Presentations should be kept simple and clear and a mixture
of text and graphics is recommended.
Illustrations
Figures should be designed to
be viewed from a distance and should use clear, visible
graphics and large type. Each figure or table should have a
heading of one or two lines. Additional essential
information should be provided below in a legend.
Photographs should have good contrast, sharp focus and, if
necessary, an indication of scale.
Text
Minimise narrative. Use large type in
short, separated paragraphs. Numbered or bulleted lists are
effective ways to convey a series of points. Do not set
entire paragraphs in uppercase or boldface type.
Titles and Fonts
Titles and captions should be short
and easy to read. Use large lettering as this means a
number of people can read the poster
from a distance without overcrowding. |
